“An idea is not a possession.
To share it freely, is to nudge the door to freedom
a little wider open.”
The SAHRA Hydroarchive software exchange site
was developed to allow the creators of hydrologic
software to share their work with the general
public. It offers researchers, practitioners and
students the opportunity to give a larger audience
access to their products in a more structured
manner and, at the same time, allows them to benefit
from the achievements of others. Use of individual
software is allowed with acknowledgement, and
depending on the individual terms of use. We hope
that this initiative will lead to a greater interaction
between researchers, practitioners and students
within the hydrological community.
Hoshin Gupta (hosh_stc@shra.arizona.edu)
came up with the concept for this software exchange
site, based on his experiences with the difficulties
involved in disseminating and sharing software
with the scientific and user community. Many of
the codes developed by his research team are included
here. Thorsten Wagener (thorsten@sahra.arizona.edu)
is the architect who converted this concept into
a workable design. Kyle Carpenter (kylec@sahra.arizona.edu)
led the design and implementation team. Ramon
Vazquez (ramon@sahra.arizona.edu)
and Brad James (bjames@sahra.arizona.edu)
did the technical and graphic design work respectively.
Please direct comments or suggestions for improvement
to one of these people.
To download software, please go to the main
page and use the wheel, the direct links at the
bottom of the page or the search engine at the
top to locate the program relevant for you. We
require a minimum of information from you before
you can download the software to derive some statistics
that will help us improve the site.
To submit software, use one of the two links
on the main page to locate the upload page. Please
be aware that we require some information and
documentation if you would like your software
to be added to this site. In the long term this
documentation will save you a lot of unwanted
e-mails from confused users.

A Welcome Message from
SAHRA Director Jim Shuttleworth!
The NSF Science and Technology Center for Sustainability
of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas (SAHRA)
has a dual mission. We conduct basin-focused multidisciplinary
research to improve our understanding of semi-arid
hydrology, but also seek to effectively convey
what is already known and what is being learned
to improve water management and policy. With the
latter purpose in mind, SAHRA has established
the Hydroarchive website to enable software exchange
within the hydrological community.
Progress in the science of hydrology and the
application of the resulting understanding are
often closely linked to the development and application
of software tools. SAHRA has developed this framework
for an open hydrological software archive that
can be readily accessed via the Internet because
we believe that free and widespread exchange of
software among hydrologists and water managers
will facilitate the sustainable provision of water
resources in general, and in semi-arid environments
in particular.
The software offered on Hydroarchive can be downloaded
by anyone, free of charge. The website also allows
software developers to make their own code available
to the community so that such software can be
freely used for research and teaching. However,
developers will have the option to limit commercial
applications of their software by defining the
specific copyright and terms of use. Placing software
in Hydroarchive is also free of charge, but we
require that some sort of manual and, preferably,
an application example be included in the submission.
SAHRA invites the international hydrological
community to explore the usefulness of this website
for the exchange and dissemination of software
tools. We also invite discussion and constructive
criticism regarding the underlying idea of the
site and its implementation.
Jim Shuttleworth, Director
of SAHRA
