Untitled Document Diagnostic model evaluation
Macro Theme Area: Integrated Modeling [Project ID: M31]
PI: Hoshin Gupta
CO-PI(s): Doug Boyle, David Brookshire, Guillermo Martinez

Summary/Goals:
This activity will oversee development of the evaluation framework for ensuring that the models developed under the Integrated modeling macro-theme are evaluated against available historical data and information.
Activities and outcomes during past year:
This project started in the fall of 2006. The main focus has been on surveying the literature, developing a new diagnostic approach to model evaluation, discussing with colleagues nationally and internationally, holding workshops, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The basic framework for a Theory of Evaluation having diagnostic power has been developed, discussed with the community, and been published in Hydrological processes in 2008. A new working group for 'diagnotic model evaluation' has been initiated within the context of Prediction in Ungaged Basins (PUB) and had one meeting. Several presentations have been made at different universities and at the Fall AGU meeting. Students have begun development and testing of diagnostic measures.

Plans for the upcoming year:
We will continue work on applications of the evaluation framework to SAHRA integrated models in collaboration with various modeling groups.
