SPAS vs. POOLS
A spa is a good water-saving alternative to a residential
swimming pool. While the average residential pool loses
over 22,800 gallons of water per year due to maintenance
refill, backwash, and evaporation, a spa generally loses
less than 6,000 gallons in that time period.
SAFETY COVERS
The best way to conserve your spa water is to install a
safety cover. Safety covers have numerous benefits: they
will protect children and animals from the water; keep the
water cleaner and in chemical balance; prevent 70 percent
of temperature losses; and reduce evaporation losses by
as much as 95 percent.
DRAINING YOUR SPA
Drain hot tubs only when necessary, not more than once every
three to six months. Proper maintainenance can help you
lengthen the periods between draining. Refrain from adding
chemicals for two to three days before draining the spa,
then use the drained water on your outdoor plants.
...AND OTHER TIPS
Many of the water-saving tips that apply to swimming
pools are also applicable to spas.
