Summary/Goals: Harvard University, DRI and SAHRA have developed a methodology based on a study conducted in the Upper San Pedro River Basin. Linked land cover, surface water, groundwater, and economic development models are used in conjunction with alternative futures scenarios to create a decision support tool for decision makers and the general public. Consequences of various development paths are visualized, and impacts on water resources are quantified.
Activities and outcomes during past year:
The Alternative Futures methodology has been successfully applied in La Paz and Loreto, two fishing villages on the gulf coast of Baja Sur. Additional applications in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and elsewhere are pending. The completed projects have resulted in several publications, including a bilingual book, a comic book for the general public, and an article in Environment.
Plans for the upcoming year:
Negotiations with Cabo San Lucas planning agencies are underway, with a project most likely to begin in mid-April 2007.
