When/Where:
Spring Snow Survey: Held every
spring in Colorado
Summer Surface Water Field Camp:
Held every summer in Arizona
Description
Join UA hydrology students learning field measurement
and analysis techniques. Work with small groups
of students to analyze this data (ie. using spreadsheet
skills - your group/mentor will provide support
for technical hydrologic issues). Develop a plan
to share your experience with your students.
Special Qualifications
Both courses are physically demanding and require
outdoor living skills. The Spring Snow Survey
requires winter backcountry travel using skis
or snowshoes and you will be called on to help
dig 3 m deep snow pits at elevations between 8000
and 12000 feet. The summer camp operates from
a campground while in the field so a sleeping
bag and tent/RV are required.
Application Procedure
Only two positions are available for each camp.
Written applications will be used to select finalist
who must complete a personal interview. Teachers
with little or no actual research experience are
encouraged to apply. Your application should be
sent to the address below and include:
- Resume (1 page max);
Please include contact info and current teaching
location, position and interests.
- Statement of interest
and expected outcomes (1 page max); Describe
how this experience will improve your teaching
and how you can plan to share this experience
with your students.
- Statement of relevant
qualifications and prior outdoor experiences;
This might include prior course work but must
include evidence that you are physically fit
to be eligible for the Spring Snow Field camp
(examples: level of sports activity, recent
mountaineering experiences, daily swimming/jogging,
…)
- Deadline:
Contact Jim Washburne (see below).
Costs
A ll course registration and most field costs
(food and lodging) will be reimbursed by SAHRA.
Personal clothing and transportation are the responsibility
of each participant.
