Basin focus: Regional SW
Specific area in
basin /
field sites:
El Desierto, Sonora, Mexico
Sacaton, AZ
Summary/Goals:
The spring 2005 seminar class won an EPA P3 grant for $10,000 to design, study and deliver a 3 gal/day homemade solar still to a rural area. We have started working with
El Desierto, Mexico and various Native American reservations.
Activities and outcomes during past year:
Participants in this activity have evaluated 4 different solar still designs and have delivered one to a school in a small border community. The spring 2006 HWR 696L class tried to develop better educational support materials for the still and better document the water quality improvements and WQ residual concentrations. None of these were found to be hazardous.

Plans for the upcoming year:
A mini still design was introduced into the state MESA competition slated for Spring 2007. About 24 sets of equipment were donated to schools to get started with this event and several training opportunities were planned. Volunteers will help judge the event.
