field sites:
Part of this project is focused on the San Pedro and Rio Grande although it should be fairly generic - applicable regionally.
Summary/Goals: Once students and adults grasp the basics of water competition and water balances, it is very difficult to take the next step and get them to seriously consider or provide enough background on the competing interests of the multiple water users and stakeholders in a watershed. This model will allow them to construct and evaluate some of these interactions.
Activities and outcomes during past year:
The model has been presented to the HWR203 class 4 times (spring/Fall 2005 and 2006). Students generally found the model engaging but we need to refine the class presentation because of time limitations. Alison completed her MS thesis on this effort and she includes extensive in-class assessment of model use there.
Plans for the upcoming year:
Develop a decision support system (DSS) model first for Arizona Water Issues undergraduate class but then take the lessons learned from this experience to expand this outreach effort both to the public (particularly the USPP) and to our Inquiry and Water Issues class for HS teachers. We are currently developing an on-line version of the model.
Organization Involvement:
Candice is working with them and a simplified version of the USPP DSS model to educate a broader base of residents about the capabilities and limitations of these models.
