Summary/Goals:
Inquiry and Water Issues is a two-week workshop for high school teachers, aimed not only at increasing their hydrologic literacy, but also at giving them much needed experience engaging in inquiry themselves, developing authentic research skills and analyzing complex (interdisciplinary) information. The goals of this project are to facilitate teacher learning and motivation in the science of hydrology and the pedagogy of inquiry.
Activities and outcomes during past year:
During the summer of 2004, 7 teachers teaching an estimated 750 students attended an IWI workshop in Tucson. During the summer of 2005, 8 teachers teaching an estimated 500 students attended an IWI workshop in Phoenix. During the summer of 2006 we hosted 8 teachers in Albuquerque, at a workshop co-hosted by Explora Science Center.

Plans for the upcoming year:
A grant proposal was submitted to the LTC's Anyplace Access for Arizonians (AAA) grant and was awarded over $54k for two years begining 7/07. One of the goals is to re-structure IWI to include web-based pre- and post- workshop activities along with a five-day teacher workshop (reduced from a 10 day event) that promotes advanced classroom inquiry and advanced knowledge of hydrology and regional water issues. We have yet to decide whether the workshop will be offered the summer of 2007 due to staff turnover.

In 2007, this project will move to a web-based interactive workshop format for teachers. This effort was delayed with the departure of Wylie but we hired John Madden, one of the developers of the course content, so we hope this gets folded in to the general redesign of SAHRA's education materials. No teacher training was done in 2006 or 2007.
